HP G9 Laptops that have the Realtek RTL8852BERealTek Wireless NIC are known to exhibit issues with certain versions of the driver. This is causing several issues with the laptop's connection to our wireless infrastructure, such as: constant switching between 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios, roaming between access points, random disconnects from WiFi.
To solve this issue we have create two GPOs to address the following:
- A GPO was created to disable Windows Updates from providing 3rd party driver updates.
- This was necessary to stop Windows Update from updating the drivers to a known "bad" version, even after technicians manually rolled the driver back.
- A second GPO was created that forces G9 laptops to rollback the WiFi driver to a known working version: v6001.15.123.347
- The GPO only targets HP G9 laptops
- The script will only execute once and upon a successful roll back will leave a 'marker' denoting its completion.
Installation logs for the driver rollback can be found here:
C:\Windows\Logs\WiFiDriverInstall.log
If for whatever reason the script doesn't work as intended. You can delete the 'marker' file and the script will execute again during the next computer startup.
The 'marker' file can be found here and deleted if necessary:
C:\Windows\System32\WiFiDriverInstalled.marker
Technicians can also manually update / rollback the WiFi drivers, if necessary. The script downloads the necessary WiFi drivers first before executing the forced rollback process. These files can be found here on all HP G9 laptops:
C:\Temp\WifiDriver
